Summarizing quality of life through composite indices: highlights from Your Better Life Index

Quality of life encompasses many dimensions and thus requires a multidimensional measurement. Yet when assessing patterns of quality of life across countries or over time, it is challenging to come-up with one single message. Composite indices of quality of life and well-being have the advantages of providing a summary picture of the main patterns and trends of quality of life, but rely on somewhat arbitrary methodological assumptions. The presentation will discuss the robustness of composite indices to underlying assumptions, by analyzing the new OECD’s interactive index named “Your Better Life Index”.
